Support materials in 3D printing

Support materials are an inherent part of fused filament fabrication (FFF) technology. While the main printout is made out of filament, during the printing process some parts need to be propped by support material. There are different types of supporting materials: breakaway and soluble.

For support, we can use the same material as main filament, too. Dedicated support materials offer different mechanical properties and post-printing requirements that affect the total time of the process. This category combines support materials manufactured by 3DGence: BVOH, ESM-10, and HIPS.

Which support material will meet your needs?

To answer that question, you need to take a few factors into account. A water-soluble high-quality support material, such as BVOH, can support models with complex geometry. Soluble support materials require less effort from the user and provide a better surface look, while breakaway support materials can reduce the costs and time of cleaning simple geometries. Choosing the right supportive filament is an important step of 3D printing process that influences the final result of your work. 3DGence experts are here to advise you on which support material will fit best for your engineering project.
